Blocking NADPH oxidase-1 may extend ketamine's antidepressant-like effects

Updated

Abstract

Essence

NOX-1 suppression may prolong ketamine-like antidepressant effects by dampening lateral habenula burst activity in a rat model.

Evidence

Preclinical experiments in Wistar Kyoto rats compared K-4, ketamine plus a NOX-1 inhibitor, and mPFC NOX-1 knockdown using behavior, bulk RNA sequencing, and lateral habenula firing measures.

Caveat

The findings are limited to antidepressant-like outcomes in rats and do not establish a maintenance strategy in patients with treatment-resistant depression.
