Bone Growth Effects, Unknown Mechanisms, and Safety of Nano-Pearl Powder and Water-Soluble Nacre Components

Updated

Abstract

Pearl powder and nacre-derived water-soluble matrix may influence bone regeneration through their biological activity.

  • The biological activity of pearl powder and nacre is associated with both calcium carbonate content and soluble matrix components.
  • Osteogenic activity has been observed in preosteoblast and osteoblast-lineage models using pearl-specific materials.
  • The existing literature shows variability due to differences in species source, extraction method, particle size, and other factors.
  • Preliminary evidence suggests that nano-pearl powder may promote osteogenic differentiation linked to cellular processes in specific models.
  • Current studies provide limited direct evidence regarding high-dose toxicity and chronic biosafety of these materials.
