Nanomedicine approaches to overcome drug resistance in breast cancer: recent progress and future outlook

Updated

Abstract

Nanomedicine may provide a multifaceted approach to overcome multidrug resistance in breast cancer.

  • Multidrug resistance in breast cancer is associated with mechanisms such as overexpression of transport proteins, evasion of programmed cell death, and the presence of cancer stem cells.
  • Various types of nanocarrier systems, including liposomes and polymeric nanoparticles, are designed to improve drug delivery and accumulation in cancer cells.
  • Combination therapies utilizing nanomedicine, such as co-delivery of chemotherapy with natural compounds, have shown enhanced efficacy in preliminary models.
  • Current preclinical studies face limitations related to the variability of drug delivery effectiveness and safety concerns.
  • Key challenges exist in translating these approaches to clinical practice, including issues with large-scale manufacturing.
