Neferine may protect against rat osteoarthritis by increasing cell cleanup processes

Updated

Abstract

Neferine (NEF) reduced articular cartilage degeneration in a rat osteoarthritis model.

  • NEF mitigated apoptosis and aging-like changes in chondrocytes induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide.
  • Activation of autophagy in chondrocytes was observed with NEF treatment.
  • NEF may enhance autophagy by inhibiting the mTOR signaling pathway.
  • In a rat model, NEF treatment significantly decreased cartilage degeneration associated with surgery.
  • These findings suggest NEF could have therapeutic potential for osteoarthritis intervention.
