Lotus flower extract reduces UVB-caused skin darkening through a specific cell energy and recycling pathway

Updated

Abstract

Topical application of Nelumbo nucifera extract (NnE) significantly reduced pigmentation in UVB-exposed guinea pigs.

  • NnE reversed UVB-induced inhibition of autophagy in human epidermal keratinocytes.
  • The extract promoted melanosome clearance and decreased melanin content in skin cells.
  • NnE's mechanism involves suppression of the interaction between AMPK and YAP, enhancing autophagic activity.
  • Key autophagy-related genes, including ATG5, were upregulated following NnE treatment.
  • Quercetin-3-O-glucuronide, a major active component of NnE, may inhibit NOX4, affecting the AMPK/YAP/ATG5 signaling axis.
