Neobavaisoflavone from valnemulin may improve ulcerative colitis by activating the AMPK pathway

Abstract

Valnemulin (VAL) is associated with restructuring the gut microbial community and promoting UC remission.

  • Cellular senescence may promote inflammatory processes that worsen ulcerative colitis (UC) symptoms.
  • VAL has been shown to mitigate colonic senescence and alleviate symptoms in UC.
  • Integrative analyses indicate that VAL enhances the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.
  • The functional metabolite Neobavaisoflavone (NBIF) produced by these bacteria activates the AMPK pathway.
  • Activation of the AMPK pathway may reduce levels of senescence marker proteins and pro-inflammatory cytokines.
  • This mechanism contributes to improvements in colonic tissue health and reduction of pathological damage in UC.
