How advanced eye disease affects eye movement control and attention to important parts of scenes

Updated

Abstract

Patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) exhibited a stronger central fixation bias compared to age-matched control subjects.

  • AMD patients showed less exploratory viewing behavior than normally sighted individuals.
  • All groups demonstrated a tendency to fixate on higher-salience areas of scenes.
  • The salience effect on fixation selection was similar in both AMD patients and control subjects.
  • Individual differences in viewing behavior were substantial among participants.
  • Reduced fixation stability in AMD patients was linked to a diminished influence of visual salience on fixation choices.
