Infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) are at substantially increased risk of long-term neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI).

  • NEC is associated with intestinal inflammation and can lead to bowel necrosis in preterm infants.
  • Clinical severity and comorbidities, such as intraventricular hemorrhage, increase the risk of neurodevelopmental impairment.
  • Neuroimaging studies have identified structural brain abnormalities in infants affected by NEC.
  • Factors specific to NEC, including systemic inflammation and gut-brain axis disruption, may contribute to brain injury.
  • Preclinical research suggests that targeting inflammation and oxidative stress could have neuroprotective effects.
