COVID-19 brain symptoms may be influenced by immune memory from past coronavirus infections

Abstract

In a study of 112 infected individuals, 18 developed neurological post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (neuroPASC).

  • Distinct humoral profiles were found in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of individuals with neuroPASC compared to those without.
  • All antibody isotypes were present in serum, while CSF was characterized by focused IgG1 and an absence of IgM.
  • Individuals with neuroPASC displayed reduced systemic antibody responses against SARS-CoV-2, leading to decreased immune activation.
  • NeuroPASC individuals exhibited unexpectedly expanded antibody responses to other common coronaviruses, including 229E and OC43.
  • The findings suggest that compromised immune responses against SARS-CoV-2 in the CSF may contribute to persistent neurological complications.
