How nerve cell stress and damaged mitochondria lead to brain immune cell inflammation after radiation injury

Updated

Abstract

Ionizing radiation increased neuronal reactive oxygen species production by X% and impaired mitochondrial homeostasis in a mouse brain injury model.

  • Radiation exposure led to enhanced production of reactive oxygen species in neurons.
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction was observed alongside increased autophagic turnover and changes related to mitophagy.
  • Lipid droplet formation and free fatty acid accumulation occurred in irradiated neurons.
  • Reduced SIRT1 expression and increased HMGB1 acetylation were linked to lipid accumulation in neurons after radiation exposure.
  • Conditioned medium from irradiated neurons activated microglial inflammation, while HMGB1 neutralization decreased inflammatory cytokine production.
