Essence

Melatonin reduced white matter injury features in neonatal hypoxia-ischaemia rats while implicating NCX1 control of PINK1-Parkin .

Evidence

This was a neonatal rat hypoxia-ischaemia white-matter-damage experiment in postnatal day 3 Sprague-Dawley rats treated with melatonin 10 mg/kg/day for four days, with molecular, histology, TEM, electrophysiology, Morris water maze, and NCX1 inhibition assays.

Caveat

The pathway and neuroprotection claims come from a rat model with pharmacologic inhibition, so neonatal human efficacy and safety were not tested.
