Herbal combination protects brain cells in Parkinson’s rats by boosting cell cleanup through the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway

Updated

Abstract

Coptidis Rhizoma-Cinnamomi Cortex (CR-CC) improved motor dysfunction in Parkinson's disease rats.

  • CR-CC reduced oxidative damage in the serum of Parkinson's disease rats.
  • The treatment modulated neurotransmitter levels in the striatum on the injured side.
  • CR-CC decreased dopaminergic neuronal loss and abnormal aggregation of α-Synuclein in the substantia nigra.
  • Network pharmacology identified MTOR, PIK3CA, and MAPK3 as core targets associated with the active compounds of CR-CC.
  • CR-CC increased the LC3II/LC3I ratio and decreased the p62 level, indicating regulation of autophagy.
  • The findings suggest that CR-CC may exert neuroprotective effects through the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway.
