Resveratrol’s potential to protect nerve cells in Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, ALS, and multiple sclerosis

Abstract

Resveratrol shows neuroprotective effects in preclinical studies across multiple neurodegenerative diseases.

  • It enhances mitochondrial function by stimulating the AMPK/SIRT1/PGC-1α pathway, which may improve ATP generation.
  • Resveratrol lowers α-synuclein accumulation and affects autophagy, both of which are markers associated with Parkinson's disease.
  • Combining resveratrol formulations with L-DOPA in animal models has shown greater therapeutic efficacy.
  • Co-administration with EGCG has demonstrated synergistic neuroprotection in vitro.
  • Activation of SIRT1 may promote neuronal survival and remyelination in multiple sclerosis without directly reducing inflammation.
  • Current evidence is insufficient to support clinical use of resveratrol for any of the neurodegenerative diseases discussed.
