Abstract

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) infection leads to mitochondrial structural damage and promotes viral replication through metabolic reprogramming.

  • NDV disrupts mitochondrial spatial distribution and causes an imbalance in mitochondrial fusion and fission.
  • The infection results in an accumulation of fragmented mitochondria that are cleared through PRKN-dependent mitophagy.
  • Although MAVS is degraded during mitophagy, blocking its degradation does not restore innate immune responses.
  • NDV-induced mitophagy leads to an increase in free amino acids in host cells, which may enhance viral replication.
  • The findings suggest that NDV remodels mitochondrial dynamics to trigger metabolic changes that support its replication.
