Nitrate supplements improve 10-km cycling time in trained cyclists

Updated

Abstract

Six days of dietary nitrate supplementation from concentrated beetroot juice improved time-trial performance by 12 seconds in trained cyclists.

  • Time-trial performance improved significantly after nitrate ingestion, with cyclists completing the trial in 953±18 seconds compared to 965±18 seconds with placebo.
  • Power output during the time trial was higher after beetroot juice supplementation (294±12 W) compared to placebo (288±12 W).
  • Submaximal oxygen uptake was lower after nitrate supplementation at both 45% and 65% of maximal power output.
  • No differences were observed in whole-body fuel selection or plasma concentrations of lactate, glucose, and insulin between treatments.
