Methamphetamine may increase brain inflammation caused by COVID-19 protein in rat immune brain cells through NLRP3 inflammasome

Methamphetamine use may enhance neuroinflammation associated with SARS-CoV-2 through microglial activation.

  • SARS-CoV-2 infection is linked to immune-mediated neurological syndromes that can persist post-infection.
  • The SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein may activate the NLRP3 inflammasome in microglia, contributing to neuroinflammation.
  • Methamphetamine use was found to increase the activation of microglia and production of proinflammatory cytokines in response to the N-protein.
  • Increased nitric oxide production was observed following meth treatment in the context of N-protein-induced neuroinflammation.
  • The effects of meth on neuroinflammation were reduced by specific inhibitors of the NLRP3 inflammasome and sigma1 receptor.
