Targeting the nitric oxide signaling pathway in blood vessel problems related to aging: a review of animal studies

Thirteen studies were included, revealing that DMARDs improved ACh-induced vasorelaxation by 2.55.

  • DMARDs significantly enhanced vasorelaxation induced by acetylcholine (ACh).
  • Phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors improved vasorelaxation induced by sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and microvascular perfusion, but did not significantly affect ACh-induced vasorelaxation.
  • Soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) modulators improved microvascular perfusion without significantly affecting ACh-induced vasorelaxation.
  • Overall, modulation of the NO-cGMP pathway is associated with improved vascular function in aged animal models.
  • The risk of bias assessment indicated mixed quality across studies, highlighting concerns in power reporting and baseline comparability.
