Nighttime Blood Pressure Drop Linked to Insulin Processing in Obese Teens

Abstract

Systolic non-dipping was present in 50% of obese adolescents studied.

  • Systolic and diastolic blood pressure dipping were negatively associated with insulin metabolism measures like the HOMA index and fasting insulin levels.
  • These associations were independent of age, gender, daytime blood pressure, or body mass index.
  • Nocturnal blood pressure dipping was not linked to left ventricular mass index in this group.
  • The findings indicate that monitoring insulin levels may be important for obese adolescents, even if they do not have diabetes.
