The link between the ratio of bad to good cholesterol and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in US adults

Abstract

Among 6809 American adults, higher levels of to HDL cholesterol ratio (NHHR) are associated with increased risk of (NAFLD).

  • As the NHHR increased, the prevalence of NAFLD rose progressively from 5.88% to 15.77% (p < 0.001).
  • Each unit increase in the NHHR was linked to a 25% increase in NAFLD risk (OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.03-1.53, p = 0.0372).
  • Individuals in the highest quartile of NHHR had over twice the risk of NAFLD compared to those in the lowest quartile (OR = 2.6, 95% CI: 1.75-3.85, p = 0.009).
  • A nonlinear dose-response relationship between NHHR and NAFLD risk was identified (p non-linearity < 0.0001).
  • The association between NHHR and NAFLD risk remained significant across various subgroup and sensitivity analyses.
