Everyday physical activity levels of shift workers compared to non-shift workers

Abstract

Shift workers reported spending 2.3 hours more per week walking than non-shift workers.

  • Shift work was not associated with levels of other physical activities or types of sports.
  • Those who worked 1-4 night shifts per month spent 2.4 hours more walking compared to non-shift workers.
  • Shift workers with 5 or more night shifts per month spent 3.7 hours more walking than non-shift workers.
  • No relationship was found between the number of years spent in shift work and non-occupational physical activity levels.
