Worse fatty liver disease is linked to imbalanced gut bacteria and changes in their metabolism

Abstract

Fifty-seven patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD were evaluated for gut microbiota composition.

  • Bacteroides abundance is significantly increased in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and significant fibrosis (F≥2).
  • Prevotella abundance is decreased in patients with NASH and advanced fibrosis.
  • Ruminococcus abundance is significantly higher in patients with F≥2 fibrosis.
  • Bacteroides abundance is independently associated with NASH, while Ruminococcus is associated with significant fibrosis.
  • Patient subgroups with increasing severity of NAFLD lesions can be identified based on the abundance of Bacteroides and Ruminococcus.
  • Metabolic pathways related to carbohydrate, lipid, and amino acid metabolism are significantly associated with NASH and F≥2 fibrosis.
