New polypeptide may block flu virus by targeting cell recycling process

Abstract

Treatment with 5 µM honey-derived peptide (H-P) significantly reduced the expression of viral proteins in influenza A virus-infected cells.

  • H-P showed minimal impact on cell viability and morphology at lower concentrations, similar to Tamiflu.
  • H-P significantly reduced the expression of viral nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) and nucleoprotein (NP) upon IAV infection.
  • Tamiflu at the same concentration only reduced NP expression but not NS1.
  • H-P induced early and late apoptotic signaling in infected cells and suppressed autophagy-related gene expression.
  • H-P increased the production of immune mediators interferon-beta (IFN-β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) specifically in response to IAV infection.
