Human reproduction update

How weight loss treatments may affect male fertility: a review and combined analysis

Updated

Abstract

A total of 32 studies were analyzed to evaluate the effects of obesity interventions on male fertility.

  • Bariatric surgery did not show clinically significant changes in sperm parameters or DNA damage.
  • Lifestyle interventions resulted in improvements in sperm normal morphology (0.59%) and progressive motility (10.56%).
  • Pharmacotherapy effects on fertility outcomes remain unclear due to insufficient data.
  • The evidence regarding the impact of weight loss on male reproductive capacity is primarily observational and has low certainty.
  • Limited randomized trials and inadequate assessment of conception outcomes highlight significant knowledge gaps in this area.
