Obesity diagnosis and death risk linked to body shape and size measures in university students

Updated

Abstract

Obesity was diagnosed according to waist circumference in 31% of participants.

  • According to BMI, 20.3% of subjects were classified as overweight and 5.1% as obese.
  • Values of waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and visceral fat area increased linearly with increasing BMI.
  • The ABSI indicated that 22% of subjects were at high mortality risk, with 4.8% of men and 28.3% of women categorized as high risk.
  • Visceral fat area and body fat percentage increased with higher mortality risk, particularly in men where waist circumference also rose.
  • The relationship between ABSI and BMI showed a U-shaped curve, while a J-shaped curve was observed for waist circumference.
