How Obesity and Weight Loss Relate to Nose and Allergy Health

Updated

Abstract

Obesity is associated with an increased risk and severity of chronic rhinosinusitis, particularly in patients with nasal polyps.

  • Adipokine mediated inflammation may link obesity to chronic rhinosinusitis.
  • Weight loss interventions, such as bariatric surgery and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, could reduce sinonasal disease burden.
  • Improved surgical outcomes in rhinologic procedures may be achievable through effective weight management.
  • Current evidence supports the need for otolaryngologists to consider obesity in their treatment plans for rhinologic and allergic diseases.
