Development of daily and light control of melatonin release in frog embryos

Updated

Abstract

Xenopus laevis embryos develop a functional circadian clock that regulates melatonin release within the first few days of life.

  • Melatonin levels are high at night and low during the day in the retinas of Xenopus laevis.
  • Cyclic light enhances melatonin synthesis, resulting in higher overall levels and greater amplitudes compared to constant darkness.
  • In constant darkness, melatonin release rapidly returns to baseline levels.
  • Pineal glands begin to produce measurable melatonin shortly after evagination at stage 26.
  • Optic vesicles show weak rhythmic melatonin release in cyclic light but elevated levels in constant darkness until stage 41.
