Oral Esketamine for Hard-to-Treat Depression: Patient Results from an Unapproved Treatment Program

Updated

Abstract

Mean exposure to oral esketamine maintenance treatment was 20.8 months.

  • No significant change in depression symptom severity was observed during maintenance treatment, with a mean difference in scores of 0.825.
  • Only 23.1% of initial responders maintained a sustained response throughout the maintenance phase.
  • 60.0% of patients who initially met minimal clinically important difference criteria continued to do so during maintenance treatment.
  • Adverse events led to 12.9% of patients discontinuing treatment, while 11.8% successfully tapered off esketamine.
  • Overall, treatment was found to be safe and well-tolerated despite the need for monitoring potential long-term side effects.
