Standing and exercise problems after COVID-19 occur despite normal nerve signals and heart function

Updated

Abstract

PASC participants had lower peak oxygen uptake indexed to lean mass at 43.0 ± 7.8 ml/lean body mass kg/min compared to controls.

  • Exercise intolerance in PASC is associated with lower heart rate reserve (84 ± 25 vs 98 ± 13 beats/min).
  • Despite normal cardiac structure and contractile function, PASC participants exhibited impaired ventilatory efficiency.
  • Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) did not differ significantly between PASC and control groups during testing.
  • 41% of PASC participants experienced orthostatic symptoms or pre-syncope during tilt testing.
  • 27% of PASC participants met criteria for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and showed lower MSNA compared to non-POTS individuals.
