OsHLP1 is a receptor that helps rice plants recycle parts of their cell's protein-making system

Updated

Abstract

The HVA22 family protein OsHLP1 is identified as a potential ER-phagy receptor in rice.

  • OsHLP1 interacts with the protein OsATG8b, facilitating the recruitment of ER subdomains during stress.
  • The cargo protein OsNTL6, which negatively regulates immune responses, is delivered to autophagosomes by OsHLP1.
  • Infection with the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae activates significant disease resistance in rice through the action of OsHLP1.
  • AtHVA22J, an ortholog of OsHLP1 found in Arabidopsis thaliana, also induces ER-phagy in plants.
  • This study highlights the potential role of a conserved protein family in mediating ER-phagy and immune responses in higher plants.
