Differences in the function and control of an enzyme involved in hormone production in sheep's pineal and pituitary glands

AANAT mRNA expression in the sheep pituitary gland is approximately 1/15th that of the pineal gland in the pars tuberalis.

  • AANAT messenger RNA and functional enzyme are present in the pars tuberalis and pars distalis of the sheep pituitary gland.
  • Expression levels of AANAT mRNA in the pars tuberalis and pars distalis are significantly lower compared to the pineal gland.
  • AANAT mRNA in the pars tuberalis is found in the same cells as the Mel1a receptor.
  • No evidence suggests that cells in the pars tuberalis or pars distalis can synthesize melatonin.
  • cAMP regulation of AANAT mRNA levels differs between the pars tuberalis and the pineal gland.
