Differences in the function and control of an enzyme involved in hormone production in sheep's pineal and pituitary glands
Updated
Abstract
AANAT mRNA expression in the sheep pituitary gland is approximately 1/15th that of the pineal gland in the pars tuberalis.
- AANAT messenger RNA and functional enzyme are present in the pars tuberalis and pars distalis of the sheep pituitary gland.
- Expression levels of AANAT mRNA in the pars tuberalis and pars distalis are significantly lower compared to the pineal gland.
- AANAT mRNA in the pars tuberalis is found in the same cells as the Mel1a receptor.
- No evidence suggests that cells in the pars tuberalis or pars distalis can synthesize melatonin.
- cAMP regulation of AANAT mRNA levels differs between the pars tuberalis and the pineal gland.
- Forskolin represses AANAT mRNA expression in the pars tuberalis but not in the pineal gland.
