Paeoniflorin improves depression-like behaviors by affecting gut bacteria and brain communication

Abstract

Paeoniflorin significantly alleviated depression-like behaviours and cognitive deficits in rats subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stress.

  • The treatment improved the abundance and diversity of gut microbiota in the rats.
  • Differential metabolites predominantly accumulated in the amino acid metabolism pathway across brain, intestine, faeces, and serum.
  • A correlation was observed between the relative abundance of microbial communities and metabolites.
  • Microbial metabolites from paeoniflorin were found to reduce neuroinflammation and enhance synaptic plasticity.
