Parainfluenza Virus 5 Carrying Normal or Prefusion RSV Fusion Protein Protects Mice and Cotton Rats from RSV Infection

Updated

Abstract

PIV5-RSV F vaccine candidates effectively reduced RSV loads in the upper and lower respiratory tracts of cotton rats.

  • PIV5-RSV F vaccine candidates showed strong immunogenicity and protection against RSV infection in mouse and cotton rat models.
  • The candidates were tested through intranasal and subcutaneous administration routes.
  • Antibodies generated against both pre- and postfusion forms of RSV F are important for neutralizing the virus.
  • The prefusion-stabilized F mutant did not result in higher neutralizing antibody levels compared to the wild-type F.
  • PIV5-RSV F may be suitable for subcutaneous administration, which is preferred for vaccinating infants.
