Long-term exposure to air pollution linked to heart and blood vessel problems in California

Abstract

Long-term exposure to fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) is associated with a 12% increased risk of incident acute myocardial infarction (AMI) per 10 μg/m3 increase in 1-year mean PM2.5.

  • A 21% increased risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD) mortality is linked to a 10 μg/m3 increase in 1-year mean PM2.5 exposure.
  • An 8% increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality is associated with a similar increase in PM2.5 levels.
  • Moderate PM2.5 concentrations (10.0 to 11.9 μg/m3) are connected to a 6% increased risk of incident AMI compared to low concentrations (less than 8 μg/m3).
  • Similar moderate PM2.5 levels are also associated with a 7% increased risk of IHD mortality.
