Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is associated with significant complications and high medical costs for dialysis therapy.

  • Progression of DKD involves an increase in the extracellular matrix of mesangial cells due to specific signaling pathways.
  • Transforming growth factor-β, angiotensin II, and protein kinase C are implicated in the mechanisms that exacerbate DKD.
  • Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors may reduce the risk of nephropathy progression.
  • Glucagon-like peptide 1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptides may have beneficial vasoactive effects that lower DKD risk.
  • Finerenone could reduce renal complications without causing severe hyperkalemia.
