Updated

Abstract

A total of 13,924 single-substance GLP-1 exposures were reported to US poison centers from 2017 to 2024.

  • The rate of GLP-1 exposures per one million US population increased by 1,830.8% from 0.97 in 2017 to 18.79 in 2024.
  • Among children aged 6-17 years, the rate of exposures rose by 4,805.0% from 0.04 in 2017 to 1.97 in 2024.
  • Most GLP-1 exposures (91.7%) were associated with no or mild effects; moderate effects occurred in 8.0% of cases.
  • Children aged 6-17 years were more likely to be admitted to medical facilities than adults, with a relative risk of 2.66.
  • Vomiting was reported more frequently in children with clinical effects (88.2%) compared to adults (61.3%), with a relative risk of 1.44.
  • Exposures among children were more likely to be due to intentional misuse, with a relative risk of 8.12 compared to adults.
