Diseases of the colon and rectum

One-Year Comparison of Nerve Stimulation and Medication for Treating Bowel Problems After Rectal Surgery

Updated

Abstract

In the treatment group receiving percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation, significant improvements were observed in several symptom scores.

  • The low anterior resection syndrome score decreased from 35.8 ± 2.5 to 29.0 ± 3.8 (p = 0.03) in the treatment group.
  • The fecal incontinence severity index improved from 36.8 ± 4.3 to 18.5 ± 8.0 (p = 0.02).
  • The obstructed defecation syndrome score showed a reduction from 10.3 ± 3.9 to 8.0 ± 4.9 (p = 0.009).
  • Changes were noted across all quality-of-life domains in the treatment group.
  • No significant differences in symptom severity or quality-of-life scores were found between groups at the 1-year follow-up.
  • The study had a small sample size, limiting its ability to detect within-group effects.
