Abstract
The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) contains two compartments that differentially regulate the expression of Period genes.
- One SCN compartment exhibits endogenous rhythmicity in the expression of Per1, Per2, and Per3 genes.
- The other SCN compartment does not show rhythmic mRNA expression but responds to light by inducing Per1 and Per2 expression.
- This second compartment has high levels of nonrhythmic Per3 mRNA expression.
- Differential regulation of clock genes in these compartments may contribute to functional differences within distinct SCN regions.
