Ongoing Gut and Immune System Imbalance in Long-Term Post-COVID Syndrome

Updated

Abstract

Individuals with post-COVID syndrome (PCS) showed elevated SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein expression in the terminal ileum 15 to 22 months after infection.

  • Increased mast cell activity and elevated zonulin levels were observed in PCS individuals, suggesting compromised gut barrier function.
  • There was an expansion of plasmacytoid dendritic cells in the terminal ileum of PCS patients.
  • Alterations in natural killer (NK) cell subsets were noted alongside higher proportions of central memory T-cells with low PD-1 expression in the terminal ileum.
  • Elevated levels of MMP-9 indicated localized gut inflammation and tissue remodeling in PCS individuals.
  • The findings suggest a potential link between gut-associated lymphoid tissue and the immune profile associated with PCS.
