Understanding Lingering SARS-CoV-2 Reservoirs in Long COVID

Updated

Abstract

Long COVID (LC) currently affects 10 to 20 million people in the U.S.

  • LC is a complex and debilitating condition with over 200 different symptoms lasting months to years after an initial COVID-19 infection.
  • Symptoms impact twelve major organ systems, leading to issues such as shortness of breath, cognitive difficulties, and mental health problems.
  • Persistence of virus and/or viral RNA (vRNA) in various organs may drive chronic inflammation and other health issues in many LC patients.
  • Challenges in developing treatments stem from the wide variety of symptoms and the absence of specific diagnostic tests.
  • Potential T cell therapies could help reduce persistent virus reservoirs, possibly easing chronic inflammation and symptom severity.
