Factors linked to ongoing symptoms after COVID-19 in Italian patients after hospital discharge

Updated

Abstract

Fatigue was reported as the most common persistent symptom in 45% of COVID-19 survivors at baseline.

  • Exertional dyspnoea, insomnia, and mental confusion were also prevalent symptoms among survivors.
  • Female sex was consistently linked to both the initial presence and ongoing persistence of all symptoms.
  • Older age correlated with baseline mental confusion and persistent dyspnoea and fatigue.
  • Greater acute severity during hospitalization, indicated by ICU admission and longer hospital stays, was associated with symptom improvement over time.
  • Pre-existing coronary heart disease and cancer independently predicted ongoing dyspnoea and fatigue, while hypertension appeared to have a protective effect.
