PF helps protect eye support cells from damage by boosting cell cleanup through a CUL3-linked energy control pathway

Abstract

Paeoniflorin (PF) treatment enhanced mitophagy in H₂O₂-stimulated RPE cells.

  • Mitophagy dysfunction is linked to retinal pigment epithelial cell damage in retinal degenerative diseases.
  • PF treatment improved mitophagy and reduced mitochondrial dysfunction in oxidatively stressed retinal pigment epithelial cells.
  • Activation of the CUL3/LKB1/AMPK/ULK1 signaling pathway is associated with the protective effects of PF.
  • Inhibition of AMPK or ULK1 abolished the protective effects of PF on mitophagy.
  • PF mitigated RPE cell loss and activated mitophagy in mouse models of retinal injury.
