Drugs for Treating Acute Stress and Preventing or Treating PTSD in Children and Teens: A Review

Updated

Abstract

Seventy-five publications were reviewed concerning pharmacological interventions for paediatric acute stress disorder (ASD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

  • Evidence for pharmacological interventions in paediatric trauma-related disorders is limited and heterogeneous.
  • Sertraline shows limited support for PTSD prevention, while imipramine may have some relevance for ASD.
  • Opioids used for pain management after trauma could reduce the risk of subsequent PTSD.
  • Early exposure to morphine for pain management is associated with lower symptom severity in observational studies involving paediatric burn patients.
  • Anticonvulsants, antipsychotics, and glutamatergics do not show sufficient benefits for routine use in treating PTSD.
  • Alpha-adrenergic agents exhibit preliminary signals of benefit for hyperarousal and sleep disturbances related to trauma.
