Melatonin may increase daytime sleep length by 24 minutes after a night shift.

  • Melatonin may also increase night-time sleep by 17 minutes compared to placebo.
  • Armodafinil probably reduces sleepiness by 0.99 points on the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale and increases alertness by 50 ms.
  • Modafinil likely has similar effects on sleepiness and alertness in shift workers.
  • Caffeine plus pre-shift naps may decrease sleepiness during the night shift.
  • Hypnotics did not significantly improve sleep length or quality after a night shift.
