Phenolic compounds in extra virgin olive oil may block harmful cell changes linked to scarring and cancer, offering new anti-aging benefits

Updated

Abstract

The EVOO-derived phenolic extract is composed of approximately 70% secoiridoids.

  • EVOO phenolic extract regulates fibrogenic and oncogenic epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in vitro.
  • It prevents the loss of E-cadherin, a protein essential for maintaining epithelial characteristics.
  • EVOO phenolics inhibit the synthesis of vimentin, a protein associated with mesenchymal cell morphology.
  • The extract appears to block TGF-β-induced disintegration of cell-cell contacts by preventing upregulation of the SMAD4 signaling mediator.
  • Crucial EMT transcriptional events related to TGF-β signaling, such as upregulation of SNAI2 and other genes, are also inhibited by EVOO phenolics.
