Physical activity and exercise programs in cystic fibrosis

Abstract

In studies with an active training program lasting over six months, physical activity probably improves exercise capacity in people with cystic fibrosis.

  • Physical activity interventions may have no significant effect on lung function as measured by forced expiratory volume.
  • Health-related quality of life in physical functioning and respiratory domains shows little or no improvement with physical activity.
  • There were no differences in the incidence of pulmonary exacerbations between the physical activity and control groups.
  • Physical activity did not affect diabetic control levels significantly after one or two hours.
  • Adverse effects associated with physical activity interventions appear to be rare.
