Abstract

A total of 78 trials with 610,872 participants were included to evaluate physical interventions for preventing respiratory viruses.

  • Wearing masks in the community may have little impact on preventing influenza-like illness or laboratory-confirmed infections.
  • Hand hygiene interventions could lead to a 14% reduction in acute respiratory infections, suggesting a probable benefit.
  • N95/P2 respirators compared to medical/surgical masks may not significantly differ in preventing respiratory illnesses.
  • Many trials had a high risk of bias and low adherence to interventions, limiting the reliability of the findings.
  • Harms from physical interventions were rarely assessed and poorly reported, indicating a need for better data.
