Results of specialist physical therapy for movement problems caused by functional motor disorder

Updated

Abstract

355 adults with functional motor disorder participated in a trial comparing specialist physiotherapy to standard treatment.

  • No significant difference was found between the two treatments for physical functioning at 12 months (adjusted mean difference 3.5).
  • Specialist physiotherapy showed benefits in secondary outcomes, including participant perception of improvement and mental health scores.
  • At 6 months, several measures favored specialist physiotherapy over standard treatment.
  • The cost-effectiveness analysis suggested a high probability (86%) that specialist physiotherapy is cost-effective compared to standard treatment.
  • No adverse events related to physiotherapy were reported.
