Plant-based microRNA 152 delivered by lipid nanoparticles may boost doxorubicin treatment in breast cancer immunotherapy

Abstract

The combination of anti-CTLA-4 miRNA and doxorubicin significantly improved treatment efficacy in a mouse tumor model.

  • miR152, a plant-derived microRNA, has shown antitumor activity by silencing CTLA-4 expression in regulatory T cells.
  • At therapeutic doses, miR152 maintains a favorable safety profile in normal cells but exhibits cytotoxic effects on specific cancer cell lines at higher concentrations.
  • The use of miR152 in treatment resulted in a reduction of regulatory T cells and an increase in CD8+ cytotoxic T cells at tumor sites.
  • This combination therapy augmented the antitumor immune response by enhancing the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and suppressing interleukin-10 production.
  • These findings suggest that miR152 may serve as a viable cancer immunotherapy agent when used alongside conventional chemotherapy.
