Blood markers on tiny cell particles show changes in immune cell energy levels in Long COVID and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Updated

Abstract

Elevated extracellular vesicle (EV) concentrations were found in both pan-ME/CFS and LC-ME/CFS compared to COVID-recovered controls.

  • Both pan-ME/CFS and LC-ME/CFS show increased concentrations of EVs compared to controls after statistical correction.
  • Leukocyte-, monocyte/macrophage-, and platelet-derived EVs were found to be elevated in both syndromes, while B cell-derived EVs were reduced.
  • Increased mitochondrial membrane potential was observed in B cell-, monocyte/macrophage-, and NK cell-derived EVs in pan-ME/CFS but not in LC-ME/CFS.
  • A nominal increase in leukocyte-derived EVs was noted in prepandemic ME/CFS, but this did not remain significant after correction.
  • Alterations in mitochondrial membrane potential in B cell-derived EV subsets were identified as significant in prepandemic ME/CFS.
