Blood particles and a specific tau protein linked to early signs of thinking problems in Alzheimer's disease

Updated

Abstract

Plasma levels of p-Tau and extracellular vesicle (EV) ratio are altered in individuals with cognitive decline.

  • NfL levels were higher in Alzheimer's dementia and mild cognitive impairment patients compared to healthy subjects.
  • p-Tau levels increased as cognitive symptoms worsened, already observable in individuals with subjective cognitive complaints.
  • EVs concentration and size ratio decreased in all cognitive decline groups compared to healthy subjects.
  • p-Tau effectively classified Alzheimer's dementia patients from healthy individuals with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.87.
  • The EVs ratio differentiated subjective cognitive complaints from healthy subjects with an AUC of 0.78.
  • Combining p-Tau and EVs ratio with other biomarkers improved classification of pre-MCI and MCI from healthy subjects.
